Mizoram loses ‘COVID-19 free’ status again, 12 returnees test positive

Mizoram reported 12 confirmed COVID-19 cases on June 2nd, 2020, over two months after the first case was reported. The cases have been confirmed at the Zoram Medical College in the state.

Of the 12 confirmed cases, 11 are from Kolasib quarantine centre, who were shifted immediately to the COVID-19 designated hospital – ZMC, while one is an inpatient of ZMC.

Informing that 10 of them have returned from Delhi recently while two from Kolkata, Chief Minister Zoramthanga said that all were asymptomatic at the time of detection of the lethal virus.

On March 24th, 2020, Mizoram reported its first COVID-19 positive case after a pastor (50), who had returned from the Netherlands, was found infected with SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease. He was the second COVID-19 patient from the north-east, after a student (23) from Manipur, who had returned from the United Kingdom on the previous day, was found to have contracted the viral infection.

The pastor spent a month in a hospital in Aizwal and was found to have recovered on April 27th, 2020. He was discharged from the hospital on May 9th, 2020, after four consecutive tests proved COVID-19 negative.

Mizoram has conducted 896 Covid-19 tests until June 1st, 2020. The state has placed 6,832 and 8,339 people in institutional and home quarantine, respectively.

India cases so far

As of 2nd June, India has reached 1,99,000+ in terms of corona positives. The country currently has 97581 active cases with 95526 cured and discharged. The total number of deaths is 5598.

Among the states, Maharashtra is the first state to cross 2 thousand deaths. It has recorded 70013 corona cases with 30108 cured, 2362 deaths, and 37543 active cases. The western state is followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Delhi has corona 20834 cases with 8746 cured, 523 deaths, and 11565 active cases. Tamil Nadu has crossed 23495 cases with 13170 cured, 184 deaths 10141 active cases. Gujarat with 17200 COVID-19 cases, so far, has 10780 have been cured, 1063 deaths, and 5357 active cases.

India has surpassed China’s official figure of 82,933 confirmed coronavirus cases. India now has 7th in most cases in the world and has surpassed Germany. So far, the USA has the highest number of covid19 cases at 1,837,170 cases

Global coronavirus cases have surpassed 6,370,763 cases, with Latin America overtaking the United States and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new daily cases globally. It represents a new phase in the virus’ spread, which initially peaked in China in February before large-scale outbreaks followed in Europe and the United States.
