GUWAHATI: NRI entrepreneur Vedanta Baruah has become the first Assamese to be granted a 10-year Golden Visa by the UAE, which is usually reserved for prominent global personalities.

The Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi, UAE granted Baruah, who is from Assam's Dibrugarh district, a special visa in the investor category.

“For me this is a proud moment. I am humbled and grateful to the UAE government and the Department of Economic Development," Baruah said.

The prominent businessman, who first visited the UAE in 2006, got his visa on Thursday, which is valid from June 23 this year to June 22, 2031, according to an official document.

He is the chief executive officer of Berns Brett Masaood Insurance LLC, which has offices in the UK, the EU and India and operates globally.

The UAE government introduced a new long-term residency visa system in 2019, allowing foreigners to live, work, and study in the West Asian country without the need for a national sponsor and with full ownership of their businesses.

The 10-year Golden Visa is usually reserved for wealthy individuals who are willing to invest a large amount of money in the UAE in exchange for the opportunity to live there.
