SHILLONG: As the law-and-order situation remained tense after Shillong descended into unrest yesterday, masked miscreants reportedly hurled a petrol bomb at state Chief Minister Conrad Sangma's private residence.

Discontent and anger simmers in the area following the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew's killing last Friday.

According to officials, the Molotov cocktail was thrown inside the compound of the Chief Minister's residence in Shillong's Laimer district.

However, it did not cause any harm, they added.

After the unrest situation in the East Khasi Hills district, police lost control of the situation, and the district administration imposed a curfew with immediate effect from 8 pm till 5 am on August 17.

The government had also banned mobile internet services in East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and Ri-Bhoi districts for 48 hours.

Thangkhiew died when his home in Shillong was raided by police early on Friday, police said.

The police had gone to Thangkhiew's home in the city's Mawlai district to arrest him in connection with a recent improvised explosive device blast in Shillong.

However, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew’s family has countered the police narrative alleging that he was killed in cold blood by the police.
