Guwahati: Now, for some interesting news from Assam's Guwahati. This Diwali, the famed Kamakhya Devalaya Shaktipeeth will be glittering in gold.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), making a Diwali gift to the people of Assam, has decided to plate the dome of the temple with gold.

About 20 kgs of gold have been donated by Reliance Industries Group, owned by Mukesh Ambani, for the purpose of gold-plating the Kamakhya Devalaya.

The Kamakhya Temple, closed since March due to the pandemic, reopened on Sunday for devotees amidst strict COVID protocols.

Mukesh Ambani, during his last visit to Kamakhya Temple, assured the temple authorities that the tomb of the temple will be designed with gold and the expenses would be borne by him.

The Reliance group has sent workers and engineers all the way from Mumbai and work is now under process.

Ridip Sarma, a priest at the Kamakhya temple said that the work is already underway.

"We have estimated that the work will be completed by Diwali. Although we do not know exactly how much expense is being incurred, they (Reliance) have brought 20 kilos of gold. More will be brought if required."

Sarma also said that the footfall at the Devalaya is not as high as it was in the pre-COVID times. "Currently, we are getting around 300 visitors daily.

Numbers are low as COVID tests are being made mandatory for all visitors.
