Remdesivir crisis to end in Assam soon; Sun Pharma to supply 10,000 vials to the state

PALASBARI: Assam will soon get 10,000 vials of Remdesivir injection from pharmaceutical major Sun Pharma’s manufacturing plant here.

The company, which has already started production of Remdesivir, is expected to roll out the antiviral drug in next 10-15 days.

The unit has a capacity of producing 80,000 Remdesivir vials per week and 3.6 lakh vials per month.

State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the manufacturing unit to review the production of the injection.

The central government is working hard to enhance the production of Remdesivir to three lakh vials per day to improve supply amid a surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.

With a massive spike in COVID-19 cases, demand for the antiviral drug has gone up manifold in the country.

Panic and desperation brought about by a more ferocious second wave has resulted in a thriving black market for Remdesivir.

A single vial of Remdesivir is reportedly selling for as much as Rs 22,000 in black market.
