GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday, has welcomed Naiwrita Joy Shukla, granddaughter of former Congress MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya from Karimganj constituency, a day after Sushmita Dev, party’s most prominent face from Barak Valley quitted the party.

Sushmita on Monday joined Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC)in Kolkata.

“We welcome our daughter of Barak Naiwrita Joy Shukla, a young budding entrepreneur who was the General Secretary of Ramjas College, to our party,” said APCC President Bhupen Borah.

Borah also asserted that Assam Congress will open doors for talented youths who are engaged in social works.

“Youth who believe in democracy, secularism and obey the Constitution and willful to serve the state may join our party,” Borah added.

“I wanted to join the party without any greed and expressed it to him (Bhupen Borah) at a time when the party itself is not in its highest peak. Ups and downs will be there always but family should stick together,” Naiwrita expressed.

At this moment Congress is under tremendous pressure of holding the party together as one after another veteran members have left the party.

A day after Sushmita Dev’s resignation, APCC President Bhupen Borah had told the media that the party would find a replacement for her within 15 days. Congress surely wanted to send a strong message by inducting Naiwrita Joy Shukla but whether she will be able to fit the shoes or not will be worth watching.
