GUWAHATI: The Assam Education Department has authorized the Deputy Commissioners today to close down the classes from Class VI to Class VIII if concerned districts have surpassed 100 marks of COVID-19 cases on a particular day till May 8.
The order effective from today, signed by commissioner and secretary for elementary/secondary and higher education department Preetom Saikia, was inclusive of both the government and non-government educational institutions, however, online classes are mandatory to be continued for the concerned students.
Earlier on April 20, releasing a fresh set of guidelines the Government had stated that in a class with 50 students, those bearing Roll No 1 to 25 will attend schools on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while those with Roll No 26 to 50, will attend schools on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In the case of students more or less than 50 in a particular class, the head of the institution would take a call on dividing the students.
On April 17 the education department had asked to shut down the Pre-primary classes from Class I to V in the districts with 100 cases on a day.
In March, the state education department had also directed both the government and private educational institutions to promote all the students from Class I to IX standard to the next class whether irrespective of the fact that they appear in the annual examinations or not and the next academic session should start invariably from 1st April 2021 unless there is any further direction from the government.
Currently, Assam’s COVID-19 tally had reached 2,37,533, with 1844 fresh cases reported in the past 24 hours. Kamrup Metro (M) and Dibrugarh had recorded cases above the 100 marks with 791 and 190 cases respectively.
The state has so far tested a total of 82,74,129 samples for COVID-19.
A total of 20,19,915 people, including 5,22,962 frontline workers, 3,15,746 healthcare workers and 11,81,207 people above 45 years have been administered the COVID-19 vaccine in the state so far.
