Assam: Rahul Roy richest candidate in Phase-II of polls with Rs. 161 cr assets

GUWAHATI: Seventy-three of the 345 candidates (or 21%) contesting in the second phase of the Assam assembly elections this year have assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore, says a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms.

Rahul Roy, the son of former cabinet minister Gautam Roy who will be contesting as an Independent candidate from Udharbond, has assets worth Rs. 1,31,22,41,783.

His wife, Daisy Roy, who will be contesting from Algapur, has declared assets worth Rs. 1,31,14,59,331.

On the flipside, Bishnu Dhari Malah, an Independent candidate from Karimganj, has declared assets worth Rs. 8,158.

According to the ADR survey, 19 (56%) out of 34 candidates analyzed from BJP, 18 (64%) out of 28 candidates analyzed from INC, 6 (32%) out of 19 candidates analyzed from Assam Jatiya Parishad, 5 (71%) out of 7 candidates analyzed from AIUDF, 3 (75%) out of 4 candidates analyzed from Bodoland Peoples Front and 3 (50%) out of 6 candidates analyzed from AGP have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.

The average of assets per candidate contesting in the Assam Assembly Elections 2021 Phase II is Rs 2.19 Crores.

the average assets per candidate for 34 BJP candidates analyzed is Rs. 2.74 Crores, 28 Congress candidates analyzed is Rs 4.78 crores, 19 Assam Jatiya Parishad candidates have average assets of Rs 88.70 lakh, 7 AIUDF candidates have average assets of Rs 21.25 crores, 6 AGP candidates have average assets of Rs 1.13 crore and 13 SUCI(C) candidates have average assets worth Rs. 25.43 lakh.

It needs mention here that 39% of the candidates who will be contesting in the first phase of the Assam Assembly elections are crorepatis, according to a report by the poll rights group Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

While MLA Naren Sonowal, who will contest the polls from Naharkatia in 2021 on an AGP ticket, is the richest among the candidates with declared assets worth Rs. 33 crore, Anupam Chutia, SUCI(C) from Lakhimpur, is the ‘poorest’ candidate with assets worth ‘only’ Rs. 15,000.
