KABUL: The festival of Eid al-Fitr turned tragic for the people of Afghanistan's Kabul as at least 12 people have been killed during prayers in an explosion inside a mosque on the outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan's capital.

According to Ferdous Faramarz, a spokesman for the Kabul police, the mosque's Imam was among the 12 killed, with at least 15 others injured. However, he did not name the mosque where the explosion occurred.

The attack was not immediately claimed as a result of a presumption of responsibility.

For the holiday, which marks the end of the Ramadan holy fasting month, Taliban insurgents have called a three-day truce.

The blast exploded less than a week after an explosion at a school killed 80 people, the majority of whom were Hazara Shi'ite Muslim schoolgirls. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which was condemned by the Taliban.

Officials in the United States claim it was the work of a competing terrorist organisation, such as Islamic State.

Even as the US begins to withdraw all of its remaining troops over the next four months, violence, including attacks on civilians, has increased in Afghanistan.
