GUWAHATI: Remember the story about a farmer in Bihar growing the world’s most expensive vegetable called as 'hop shoots' and selling them for Rupees one lakh per kg? Well, reports are now claiming that it was all a huge lie.

The news of the production of the "world's most expensive vegetable" in Bihar by Amresh Singh went viral on social media, after an IAS officer tweeted about it.

“One kilogram of this vegetable costs about Rs 1 lakh ! World's costliest vegetable,'hop-shoots' is being cultivated by Amresh Singh an enterprising farmer from Bihar, the first one in India. Can be a game changer for Indian farmers” IAS officer Supriya Sahu tweeted, along with two photos.

Following the viral news, when a national media team visited Amresh Singh in Bihar, no such crop was found being cultivated there.

Even the locals of the area said they never heard of any such crop being grown in that area.

Moreover, when Singh was asked about the crops by the team, Singh said it was in Nalanda district, approximately 172 kilometers away from his village. However, when the team visited there, he said it was in Aurangabad.

Upon inquiring with the district magistrate of Aurangabad, Saurabh Jorwal, no reports of cultivation of such crops in Aurangabad was found.

Although Singh had previously cultivated black rice and wheat, but there was no evidence of hop shoots cultivation, according to the reports.

Hop shoots are native to North America and Europe. According to several reports, every part of the plant has several uses, from the fruit to the flower to the stem. This vegetable is also said to be high in antioxidants, which may help with skin health, anxiety, insomnia, and other issues.
